The Start

My designing process started with thinking about what kind of design I would like to do and which technique I would like to use. I decided that I wanted to do a real product this time, not just textures and surfaces. And because I really want to draw the pattern myself and make it quite detailed I decided to use digital printing to execute the fabric to my design.
After this decision I searched for inspiration from Pinterest and wandered around the city photographing interesting surfaces. Our common theme is nature and the interesting surfaces and growth and shapes you can find there. Roots and their shape and soft lines inspired me the most and I really want to bring that inspiration to the pattern. Here are some of the pictures I found very inspiring.

Next step was to think about what kind of a product I want to design. I wanted it to be something new and challenging to me. After some speculation and visualizing I came to the conclusion that designing a lamp would be something I have never done before that would also be an actual product and I could make use of my knowledge of textile designing in something new to me. After discussing with our team about what kind of a space we want to create to the fair we decided that lamps hanging from the ceiling would fit there well so now some of us will design lamps to the space.

Then I started sketching the pattern and the shape of the lamp. My brain created a vision and the next step is to little by little to try to actualize that vision. I have an idea to use old glass bottles for the lamp.. we'll see how that works. I'm going to have to make some experiments.. More of that later on..

Enjoy your week!
