GETTING INSPIRED

Exploring nature with my kids is something we do often, and my sons never tire of finding interesting stuff to photograph. We easily spend several hours outside just walking around where ever they fancy. Having a camera with us keeps them really interested in investigating the small stuff and focus on details. Not all of our pictures turn out great, but some provide great inspiration for my work. Here are some inspirational shots that I have added to my scrapbook.

Now that I am busy at the loom weaving fabrics for my work, I can barely wait till I am done so that I start experimenting with dyeing them.

I will be posting some more photos of my fabrics soon, so till then take care.

Field Trip

We made an excursion to this place called Lammassaari with Ina. Hoping to find inspiration for our project we headed out with lunch and hot chocolate in our backpacks. Here's some of our pictures.

We hope you find Lammassaari as beautiful as we did.

The Start

My designing process started with thinking about what kind of design I would like to do and which technique I would like to use. I decided that I wanted to do a real product this time, not just textures and surfaces. And because I really want to draw the pattern myself and make it quite detailed I decided to use digital printing to execute the fabric to my design.
After this decision I searched for inspiration from Pinterest and wandered around the city photographing interesting surfaces. Our common theme is nature and the interesting surfaces and growth and shapes you can find there. Roots and their shape and soft lines inspired me the most and I really want to bring that inspiration to the pattern. Here are some of the pictures I found very inspiring.

Next step was to think about what kind of a product I want to design. I wanted it to be something new and challenging to me. After some speculation and visualizing I came to the conclusion that designing a lamp would be something I have never done before that would also be an actual product and I could make use of my knowledge of textile designing in something new to me. After discussing with our team about what kind of a space we want to create to the fair we decided that lamps hanging from the ceiling would fit there well so now some of us will design lamps to the space.

Then I started sketching the pattern and the shape of the lamp. My brain created a vision and the next step is to little by little to try to actualize that vision. I have an idea to use old glass bottles for the lamp.. we'll see how that works. I'm going to have to make some experiments.. More of that later on..

Enjoy your week!

Outing

Early this month me, Sara and a friend of ours headed to the heart of Finnish forests to collect ideas. The weather was pleasing, and we came across some interesting details of the nature.

We even found eatable mushrooms and cooked them - with great results. The excursion was truly profitable.

Have a good day!

Preparations

We are a group of creative people, who study textile design. Our class has been invited to participate the biggest international trade fair for home and contract textiles, Heimtextil, next January.

First there were many mood boards, collages, mind maps and inspiration pictures. Little by little the ideas have started to form.

We are happy to share our process towards the Heimtextil 2014 fair and we hope you enjoy our blog - welcome along!
