PHOTOGRAPHY AS AN INSPIRATION

When I was looking through my photos for finding inspiration for upcoming Heimtextil project I found several photos to work with but these 2 photos actually made it to my digitally printed designs.

#1

I love sea and beach!
In summer I try to spend as much time as I can by the shore.
These little seashells are shaping the texture of sand in the water. With every wave the surface becomes different again.

#2

The other print design comes quite directly from this photo. This is a vertical sea bank of sandstone witch is so beautifully engraved with time.

So here are my final designs:

I wish you a lot of inspiration!

Portfolios, business cards and flyers for Heimtextil 2014

Among the designing work we made brief portfolios, business cards and flyers for ourselves to take with us to the fair. Of course one of the main points of the fair besides showing your work is to create contacts and to network. For example for students Heimtextil is an excellent place to find internships abroad.

The flyer of our project (designed by Amanda).

And here's a little peek of my material.
I enjoyed working with these and I'm looking forward to expand my portfolio later in spring.

Merry Christmas all!!

Our class shared a fun moment recently while sipping coffee and glancing through some old magazines. This Heimtextil advert was published in a Finnish magazine in December 1980 - what a nostalgic coincidence!

Have a splendid weekend!

Amanda

Calculations - part three

Almost there…

I promised to post some photos of fabrics that I have been weaving, and here they are. As you may recall, I was inspired by mycelium. So I tried to merge what I felt visually and emotionally into these fabrics and prints.

Now I'm working hard on putting together my 'tyyppi' figure - wish me good luck.

RYIJY- The experiment

For this project I am making four different versions of a traditional Finnish rug- ryijy. The inspiration for this project comes from Finnish nature, which has been a recurring theme in these traditional wall textiles. I am inspired by traditions and how they take bearings in the present.

Ryijy is maybe the most traditional Finnish textile which I think is nowadays not valued enough. As a kid I watched my grandmother making her own ryijy and remember being amazed of her talent. I have been interested in ryijy rugs for a while now. I knew i wanted to do something with threads and wool, so making a ryijy for this project felt like a natural choice for me.

A ryijy rug can be made in two techniques: By weaving on a loom, or by sewing the threads into a base fabric. This ryijy I sewed by hand.

I'm going to make one ryijy rug of these pom poms made of recycled yarns. I wanted to make one traditional ryijy, and three more experimental ones. I still have to experiment with the techniques a bit, but now that my work is progressing I can't wait to see the results!

I will show you more pictures of the rugs later on when they are finished.

Have a nice week!

Dive deep into the underground

Hi there!

I’m designing a print for a wall tile. I got my inspiration from roots and soil. I wanted to dive deep into the underground and see what time has hidden beneath.

In this project I wanted to study abstract shapes and textures of nature, such as mold and moss, and of course develop my visual expression. Here’s some of my sketches:

Still so much to do and time is running out. Let's get going! ;)

Calculations - part two

Getting there!

There's some serious progress happening with my lamp designing!

For the past few weeks I have been cutting old glass bottles which I'll use in my lamp. That turned out to be quite challenging but after testing a few different techniques I managed to cut the bottom of the bottles neatly. All I needed was a glass cutter and hot/cold water. Then I used sandpaper for the sharp edges.

Today I finally got my fabric which I had waited for several weeks and I could really get things going. I designed the pattern myself after being inspired by roots. The pattern is digitally printed on transculent cotton and ordered from Spoonflower. I sewed these little "hoods" for the bottels and used a little bit of glue to keep the fabric still.

So, only finishing touches to be done and then figuring out the electrics and lights. Next time I'll be posting photos of a finished product!

These three bottles will be hanging from one wire composing one lamp.

Have a great day, will get back to this!

BACK TO THE ROOTS

I have been really busy working on my lamp shade and there is still so much to do. So this will be quite a short post.

My inspiration came from roots, mycelia and lichens. I find winding and curly branches and roots very fascinating. I'm trying to imitate that effect in my lamp shade. The colors I'm using are three different shades of grey.

Inspired by nature

In the beginning of autumn I got inspired by the nature and mould formations. The aquarelle paintings above illustrate those formations and I use them in my product for the Heimtextil fare. I am working on designing the lamp, in which I combine the use of wood and silk painting. The wood work I have given to the professional, which allows me to concentrate on my own speciality, textile design. I intend to paint aquarelle type of surface on the silk by using reactive colors and sea salt.

..To be continued..

Odotus, the Expectance

For the time being Arto Mankinen is working with printed fabrics. The design is based on a collection of his own photographs, which is called Odotus, the Expectance. He has taken these pictures in the spring of 2013 at the Fortress island Suomenlinna, in Helsinki Finland.

There is a certain glow and tender light in the pictures. A perceptive viewer can find some things which resemble mycelium and spider webs in the core of the image. These photos reveal a bit of light, which can not yet fully be seen. Artos aim is transmit the same feeling of Expectance to his fabrics.

PEEK

Here is a little peek into my design for the Heimtextil fair..

My inspiration came from winter, snow and ice. I`m going to design a lamp because I want to
make something usable. I was inspired by the lightness and delicacy of tulle.
Many times tulle is considered as a "wedding fabric", but I want to show that it can be used in many other ways too.

Here are some inspiration photos:

For this surface design I have used only gray tulle and foil tying them up in small "pearls". I want the fabric to maintain its characteristic and lightness so I´m reaching an impression with the design where the lamp is "floating" in the air.

My INSPIRATION //.

My style is to combine something intense with delicate.

I have always been inspired by stones; their texture, colours and how you can see the flow of time in them. Right now I’m enthusiastic about minerals. The earth's crust and the stones consist mainly of minerals. There are about 4000 minerals; about 20-30 minerals form all of the stones.

For this project I’m making a lamp shade which is inspired by minerals; their shine, shape and textures. I went to few museums to study the minerals and took some pictures. Most inspiring minerals for me are quartz, gypsum, dolomite, harmotome and amethyst.

Colours for my lamp shade are silver, white and grey. Currently I’m experimenting with materials like straws, fake silver leaf, cotton, linen and fabric stiffener.

Here are my most inspiring pictures I took from the Mineral cabinet
(starting from the top): quartz, gypsum, dolomite, harmotome & amethyst.

I’m excited to see the results, fingers crossed! I will tell you more later on.

Heimtextil 2014 is getting closer!

Keep your eyes open, a lot more posts and photos coming up soon! Our team had a few courses in school in the middle of the autumn so there's a reason why you haven't heard from us in a while.

Our journey to Heimtextil is getting closer and right now we are working like crazy. You will be hearing a lot more about our progress during rest of the year and of course in the beginning of next year when we'll be finally travelling to Frankfurt.

Right now among the actual designing work we are working on our portfolio, business cards and flyers for ourselves to take them with us to the fair. More of that later too.

Just a short post to say hi and to let you know that you will see some superb designs in the very near future. We'll keep you posted!
